Meet Sam

Hi, I’m Sam, founder of InnerWorks3. I have been helping individuals, families, leaders, and teams get stronger and healthier for over 35 years. I’m here to help you take the next right step toward your goals and experience transformational growth.

My journey hasn’t been linear, but every step has somehow connected to the next. What I know is that hope is born through adversity. In each step of my journey, the moments of joy, pain, uncertainty, growth, celebration, loss, darkness, and light have led me to where I am today.

I started my “real” career as a mental health counselor in 1989. I love working with people and helping them move forward. What I found as a therapist is that often people stayed stuck for longer periods of time than I thought they might. Though therapy can be powerful for some people, I began seeking other ways to help my clients transform — methods to help people get unstuck and move forward faster.

While I was a therapist, I took a post-graduate class in adventure-based team building. I loved it and loathed it all at the same time. I was never the first one chosen in gym class. And here I was again in the same situation. I decided I had a choice: I could drop the class or push through. I chose the latter. In the two and a half weeks we were in class, I learned how to make my own rock climbing harness, climbed a small “mountain,” rappelled, and conquered a ropes course facing fear in the face. I learned from two of the most talented adventure-based team building facilitators I have ever met.

Those two professors, and that dreaded class, changed the trajectory of my career. I was part of a team that started an adventure-based team building program for students in our local schools. We saw incredible outcomes from students who were involved in the program, such as gradepoint averages increase, attendance increase, discipline referrals decrease, and dropout rates decrease, all at a statistically significant level.

During this time I was introduced to CliftonStrengths. From there I started my own business. We worked with organizations and companies focusing on leadership development, team building, and culture.

One of our clients asked my team and I to come start an organizational development program for them. Little did I know this was continuing to push me to grow and learn new things. All part of my journey. Another stone on my path. We took all the concepts we knew and believed in and started pouring into our new colleagues. We had remarkable success.

After 10 years, I felt called to join a healthcare system in the midwest. The same principles applied. Eventually I was asked to lead the Talent Management and Organizational Development team that serves well over 30,000 people. I met our new VP in the fall of 2023. He opened doors that I didn’t know existed: The Adult Chair and the Narrative Enneagram. The growth I have experienced through all three programs — The Adult Chair, the Narrative Enneagram, and CliftonStrengths — in my mind, is the trifecta.

Today, I bring this collective knowledge, my experiences, and the tools I’ve collected along the way to individuals, leaders, and teams who are ready for real transformation.

A little about me personally:

I am married to my best friend and the string to my balloon. We’ve been married for 33 years. We have two children who are both married and have families of their own. Collectively we have seven grandchildren who have each stolen our hearts just by being their own precious and incredible individuals.

As I step into the next chapter of my life, my passion is to help others uncover their next step on their journey. While the destination may feel uncertain, one truth remains: your future begins with a single, intentional choice. You hold the power—and the energy—to create the life you envision. It all starts with that first step toward the future you are meant to create.
